[Review] Scion FR-S 2013: Exterior

First, I would like to thank to my sales person J, who kindly offer me a chance to test drive Scion FR-S.

FR-S
86 Logo

FR-S stands for Front engine, Rear wheel drive Sport car. In Japan, this car is under Toyota brand and is named “86”. If you are a comic fan, you might know“Initial D”. Yes, a guy drives AE 86 and defeats many well- known cars during downhill racing. Toyota 86 (FR-S) is the successor of AE 86. (FYI: Can you believe it? AE 86 in 1983 was Corolla.)

In United States, this car, Toyota 86, is under Scion brand which targets for young buyers.

Exterior:

1.      FR-S was originally from the project of “FT-86”. F.T. stands for Future Toyota. Before it was released last year 2012, its concept car was called “FT-86 II concept”. Interesting thing is that Scion also has a concept car for FR-S, although most 86 fans know this car is based on the design of FT-86 II.

2.      As you can see the front end is very similar. The shape of the FR-S head light is round on the side, compared to the concept car, which is more like a triangular.

3.      The design idea of FRS actual from 2000 GT and AE 86. They all have a very similar body shape: long nose and short tail.
Rear View of FR-S

4.      The body height of FR-S is only 2758 LB (manual).

5.      The roof is not flat. It can be called "channeled roof" for aerodynamic purpose.

6.      Alloy wheels is 17 inches. The same size as Toyota Prius.

7.      Side window will automatically slightly lower when open the door.

1.      Trunk space very small. Only 6.9 Cu. Ft.

2.      The car body is very low. The ground clearance is only 4.9 inches. Must be very careful about speed bump.

[NEWS] Scion FR-S 2014

Scion FR-S (or toyota 86 in other countries) will have new features in 2014 model!

1. standard 6.1 inch touch screen display.
2. new knee cushions located on the door panels and the sides of the center console.

Another option is premium audio system with "navigation".

However, the MSRP for MT is increasing to $25,455 USD.
(This is very interesting, since Japanese yen is depreciation and Scion increases the price.)

FYI: Another news suggests the FR-S will get upgraded engine for model year of 2015.

[NEWS] BMW i8 Production model

Another new electrical car will be revealed at Frankfurt Auto Show-
BMW i8

One of major features is that i-series use "carbon fiber" for the cabin.

Carbon fiber is very lightweight material but as strong as steel. Many super cars apply carbon fiber already. BMW claims that the i-series will be the first mass production car using carbon fiber.
(p.s. Super cars are usually hard to mass production)
(FYI: Toyota can assemble a car within 57 sec.)

Look forward the production version of i8!

[NEWS] Infiniti Q30 Concept

The coming Frankfurt Auto Show will have several new cars appear!
So exciting!

Infiniti just releases the first image of the coming Infiniti Q30 concept.

Q30 Concept

This car has a big front grille, which is very similar to Q50. Do you notice one thing? The pattern of Q50 grille is mesh while the pattern of Q30 concept's grille is line.

(FYI: One interesting thing is that, typically, sport cars have mesh design on their front grille.)

Q50

The engine of this Q30 is still a mystery.
So let's wait and see!

[NEWS] Ferrari 458 Speciale

FYI Cars: News and Reviews

Albert Einstein said

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

This is my philosophy to write car reviews and share car news in this blog “A’s Garage”. My background was not mechanical engineering, not physics, and not even relative to auto industry. I just like cars, and fortunately I lived in Detroit, the auto city, for several years and gave me chance to learn and study cars!
